Why Use a Strategic Canvas for Effective Strategy Development
Finding opportunities for growth and innovation is a challenging process at the best of times. The strategic canvas has gained traction as it addresses this challenge. This versatile tool allows organisations to visualise their current and future strategies. By fitting into components such as SWOT analysis and prototyping, it serves as a foundation for advanced and actionable strategies.
What is a Strategic Canvas?
What it is
A strategic canvas is a central diagnostic tool and an action framework for building a compelling strategy. It simplifies a strategic landscape into a single visual representation. It’s designed to depict the key elements of strategy.
Where it came from
W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne developed the concept of the Strategic Canvas in their 2005 book, “Blue Ocean Strategy” . Their framework was a result of their extensive research and has since become a key tool in strategic management. It has also spawned many variants in specialised functions that we’ll look at later.
Benefits of Using a Strategic Canvas
Improved Clarity
Using a strategic canvas provides a clear visual representation of your business or program. This allows you to see all aspects of your strategy on a single page. This holistic view simplifies complex strategic landscapes. It highlights the key mechanisms of your model, making it easier to identify areas for innovation and growth.
Enhanced Communication
The strategic canvas fosters better communication within your organisation. By setting up a shared language, it enables more effective strategic conversations among team members from diverse backgrounds, including C-level executives and cross-functional teams. This common understanding helps align decision-making and strategic initiatives across different levels of the organisation.
Better Collaboration
Using a strategic canvas speeds up discussions and enhances discussions of your company. It serves as a focal point for various strategic analyses. It helps teams to work together effectively and advance faster.
Holistic View
A strategic canvas provides a unified view of your organisation’s business model. It covers all the elements from customer segments to value propositions and operational strategies. This comprehensive perspective is crucial for documenting, analysing, and developing effective strategies that cater to both current and potential markets.
Key Components of a Strategic Canvas
Customer Segments
Understanding your customer segments involves identifying distinct groups based on characteristics such as demographics, needs, and behaviours. This segmentation allows for tailored strategies that cater specifically to each group. In turn this will increase satisfaction and engagement.
Channels
Your value proposition is delivered to customer segments through Channels. The goal is for customers to receive your products or services in the most convenient and effective manner. This could be through direct or indirect, digital or physical channels.
Customer Relationships
Establishing strong customer relationships is crucial for long-term business success. How you interact with customers will affect customer retention and loyalty. Fostering a deeper connection with your audience encourages repeat business and referrals.
Value Propositions
Your value propositions are the core of your strategic offerings. They highlight the unique value your organisation provides to its customers. We help you define them to differentiate your services or products from competitors. They should also address specific customer needs and solve their problems.
Key Activities
Key activities are the essential actions required to execute your company’s business model. These include production, problem-solving, and service delivery. All these should align with your value propositions to meet customer expectations and support your strategic objectives.
Key Resources
Resources such as human, financial, physical, and intellectual assets are vital for the delivery of your value propositions. Mapping these ensures that your business can meet its operational demands and maintain competitive advantage.
Key Partnerships
Strategic partnerships can extend your capabilities and market reach. They support various aspects of your business model, from enhancing your value offerings to expanding into new markets. Effective partnerships are based on mutual benefits and aligned objectives.
Revenue Streams
Identifying viable revenue streams is essential for financial sustainability. These streams may include direct sales, subscriptions, licensing, or ads. Understanding these sources of income will help support growth.
Cost Structure
Managing your cost structure involves understanding what expenditure will deliver on your strategy. This includes fixed and variable costs. They should align with your potential revenue streams to ensure profitability and competitive pricing.
Practical Applications of a Strategic Canvas
Strategic Planning
We use variants of the strategic canvas in strategic planning across various business units within organisations. This provides a clear overview of different business strategies in action. This shared language helps with strategic alignment and promotes a cohesive approach to development. We also use them with clients to support regular strategic planning cycles to blueprint their strategy. We do this at company offsites or executive workshops to guide direction and strategic discussions.
Innovation
When an existing strategy or program needs a reboot, we will introduce Lean variants or break out specific sub-models. They enable us to look deeper into the value proposition or customer profiles. Organisations also use the strategic canvas as a template for developing and submitting innovative ideas.
Competitive Advantage
The strategic canvas helps businesses understand and enhance their competitive advantage. By mapping out the current market scenario and industry benchmarks, companies can identify their unique positioning and how they differ from their competitors. Businesses can develop unique selling propositions (USPs) and target niche markets where competition is minimal.
Situational Variants
When working with clients, we use various adaptations of the strategic canvas depending on needs. The Lean Canvas focuses on early-stage startups and innovation projects, emphasising problem-solution fit and maintaining simplicity in solutions. We also introduce our own custom created versions for specific functions. These include the online community planning canvas, the social media program canvas, and the internal communications canvas. These all take in key components of the original strategic canvas whilst being geared to their respective areas of focus.
